3D Desktop

Yo homeboys and homegirls, this is my first ever(!!) blog post, so excuse me if I don’t know all the blogging rules and etiquette.
So what I’m going to tell you today is going to change your life (If you’re a complete geek that is). I was sent this link yesterday, and thought I’d share it with you right away: http://honeybrown.ca/Pubs/BumpTop.html
This is a demo video of a physics-based 3D desktop application called BumpTop. It’s being developed by some guy in Toronto called Anand Agarawala. Very interesting and intuitive interface lets the user organize, browse through, and find files very easily. It looks like it’d be a lot of fun to use too.
That’s it from me for today. See you later…

Now I’ll be able to make messy stakes of paper on and off the computer!

Just kidding… There are some seriously cool things going on here. It’s great to see that someone is working on trying to get us out of the 20+ year old way of doing things on a computer.

It seems like they’ve done a good job using the best of both worlds. Although I think there need to be some labeling of files. If I had to locate documents solely based on their icons I’d never find anything.

Great post Memo! It’s nice to hear from you.

I love it! I think there is something about the real-world pile of “to-dos” and important papers that I loose with the computer desktop. Making a todo list or a calendar reminder isn’t quite the same as the things that I stack at the base of my keyboard everyday to remind me to pay attention to them.

One thing I particularly like about this is how you can clearly delineate what has been attended to vs. what hasn’t. I.e. you can throw a ton of stuff into one corner of the desktop versus group and make a tidy pile of items that you have looked at. If only I could do this with email…

Nice post, Memo! Keep them coming!

And, that fish-eye view for sorting through piles is the cat’s meow!
