inspirations, part 2 : mechanics

with two parents as engineers, i am ashamed to confess at struggling through high school physics and maths. however, I always loved technical diagrams, mechanical drawings, and the library of old engineering books at my grandpa’s house. and, as an adult, and looking for mind benders, I am once again interested in the general how and why of things. one of the earliest books I remember being obsessed with is “the way things work” by David Macaulay. indulging in our fascinations with the intricacies of how things are built, Macaulay is next working on how “we” work (i.e. the human body). i am intrigued.

how does a straw work? here is a helpful diagram:

Macaulay is speaking at the MFA at the end of this month as part of their celebrity lecture series. And he has a nice mustache!
