image influence: spring peeks

fervent spring is making my “research” a bit slapdash, but a nice cushion of time makes for lots to look at (plus, studio mates make good recommendations)! hence, in no particular order:

looking at the plethora of zines at Quimby’s, it was hard to pick just one to walk away with. hence, I picked two. and decided what might be the future of the happy&optimistic project.

Rachel Mason’s “Sidewalk” (annual?) is a lovely set of photographs as observations from the sidewalk of recurring objects, places, patterns built into a collective whole in the small zine format.

although I admired many a mini-dress at Hejfina, I ended up buying the lovely little book of Robert A.A. Lowe and Rose Lazar (”Gyromancy”) because of the drawings on the shop’s walls. The limited edition book and 3″ cd comes in a pretty package of fabric casing, and I confess that I accidently bought two (one in the fabric case with color detailing, and one in just the black and white book format).

I can’t find a very satisfying visual of the package, but here is a nice write-up of the series. Lazar also runs Great Lakes Goods, a lovely little etsy papergoods shop, to get a sense of what her wit and illustration style is like.

with so much under construction, I was really excited to see the art institute of chicago trying something new with their 2×4 wallpaper in the midst of the temporary walls and renovations.

I have been a fan of Hayuk’s for a while — even her absolut ads were lovely with their large scratchy patterns. Steven bought me a set of prints that are a little salacious, and made my favorite frame shop owner blush. I just found this set of interviews and have been reading up!maya hayuk interview
