Pillow Fort

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Our compatriot Memo Irdel (along with his friend, Seth Jablon) has done some lovely design for the Creativity/Penguin Design Competition. The Pillow Fort entry was the first runner up, amongst a tight competition of twenty five finalists! (the first two covers are theirs, plus some samples of the others)

(this last one was the winner)

lines & shapes

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

a few things I am really tickled about this weekend:

1. just received my lines & shapes subscription (with the first three volumes), providing not only ample reading material, but hopefully a spur for 47!

2. lena corwin (a creator and contributor of lines and shapes) also just put out a book printing by hand. I am [...]

image influence: charles harper

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Indulging in my ongoing obsession with wildlife-inspired graphics, I recently came across Charles Harper. In a style he called “minimal realism”, Charley Harper looked at nature as a series of shapes, patterns and textures, all amounting to a colorful phantasmagoria that inspires his simplified and controlled compositions.

“There’s some who want to count all the [...]

bookmark 01 : graham greene

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Falling for Graham Greene novels was a fortunate event: he was a prolific writer, so I haven’t even cracked the beginnings of the bibliography. My first mark making, therefore, has to be in a few of my favorites of his novels, and my curiosity about older cover art took me to a unspecified location of [...]

bookclub begins

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Nobody Belongs Here More than You has now been read by atleast five of us; hence, it must be time to start a bookclub.

I notched a new page for the guerilla element of the gang: bookmark! Books you like, books you tell your friends about, books you want people to read, all can be marked [...]

I confess to being one of those little girls that snuck nancy drews into bed, in order to read (until the end of the chapter, of course!) under the covers with a flashlight long after my bedtime. My obsession with mysteries has stuck: Ms. Marple, Adam Dalgleish, the 87th precinct, Hitchcock’s Stories Not for the [...]

Baking an Annual Report

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

The new annual report from the food comany Podravka… With the title Well Done and wrapped in foil… But wait! The book is empty!

Of course, there is a lot more! The text and images in Well Done are printed using a thermo-reactive ink; hence, the foil wrapping is a functional tool — the book needs [...]

I.Q. tests and the Flynn effect

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

I.Q.s around the world appear to be rising by three points per decade. Working backwards, this means that a century ago the US population consisted mostly by folks who today would be considered mentally retarded. So what is I.Q. really measuring? Modernity!
Malcolm Gladwell has an interesting article/review of James Flynn’s “What is Intelligence” in the [...]

We’ve been getting a bunch of spam so I installed a word verification pulgin called reCAPCHTA. It’s similar to other word verification tools in that you get an image of a word and you have to type it in but this one adds a second word. This second word could not be digitized by a [...]
